Our water softener went kaput a while ago. So far I've had three men in my basement, and none of them knew how to deal with the one I had. We purchased it about five years ago. I've started to investigate water softeners....thrilling topic. We have hard water and have to do something before our dishwasher starts spraying calcium laden water at us. Please let me know what's working in your home. thanks, Roberta

Roberta,
who have you called about this softner i have worked on them for years i cant believe that they say they cant fix this. well i will if you answer it is a rainsoft but what is going on with it . does it not work at all or is it just not softing the water the way it is suppose to. i know they look like some technical gadget but they are really fairly simple it almost sounds without knowing anything at all it may need recharged . i am new here but please feel free to contact i may be able to help you with this.
Thank you for responding. The softener is made by MacClean. One serviceman took it apart and said that the part that was broken can't be replaced. That they don't offer parts for these machines anymore. I live in Meadville and get the sense that local plumbers are less interested in dealing with water softeners, though we all need them.
Ours stopped functioning some time ago. Months...The way the dishwasher "wasn't" working told me that it must have gone kaput. On line they suggest machines made by Fleck. My concern is that if I don't buy what Gordon Brothers or Culligan is servicing, I'll get stuck again.

well yes unfortunately that is how the water biz company's work the insist you use what they sell and wont guarantee things if you don't there is another called rain soft but stay away from them as alls they want to do is to tell you that you need a bigger system or upgrade. yes i was in the biz for 14 years i have built and installed many systems . it is a shame that thye couldn't replace the head on the softner i could recommend one other place that may possibly be able to help i am not sure if they service softner's any more or not but it may be worth a phone call. they are called miller pump and supply they are really good people and hope they may be able to help or at lest give you the name of someone that may.

alls that gordan and culligan do is bring you salt and add it to the system and charge you a contract fee if by chance something would happen they will fix walmart sells the salt as well as lowes and all the hardwares it isnt hard to do oh and they may purge the system which if it is installed and working right it does it on its own.

i would if i were you weigh the options of there contract vs buying one outright and changing it over if you need help changing over feel free to contact me hecks i would drive down i am up in erie and help yous get it changed over its very easy to do. macclean still is in buisness http://www.macclean.com/residential/ you may be able to just get a new head and reload the softner with media and green sand i know sounds greek sorry media is usually activated carbon and green sand is a special sand that gos on the botom of the round cylinder .

i would check there website and even call them they may be able to help over the phone. ok well enough info good luck with this .
Thank you so much. You sound like you have a good handle on this type of appliance. Neither my husband nor I are handy. Well I bake well and he's a terrific cook and we make people laugh. I'll contact MacClean and see what they say. I'll get back to you. what are you doing in Erie? Where were you before? What are you working on now?
