Thanks so much for your insight. How old do you think kids can be to handle that kind of drama? It probably depends on the kid, I guess, but how old is your son, now? And what can he watch that he wasn't ready to before?

My kids were never big on Disney movies at that age. I still remember popping in Peter Pan and stepping out of the room for a minute and returning to find my son cowering behind the couch because the Croc was after Captin Hook. And the scene in…

animated movies

I'm working on a story about how just because a movie or show is a cartoon doesn't mean it won't scare or confuse small children. My kid (4) was so freaked out about the beginning of "The Incredibles," that he hid behind the couch. Have you ever assumed an animated movie was OK? What do you think about it? Older Disney flicks aren't really any better. "101 Dalmations" has two smokers, thieves who drink, and the concept of skinning puppies. Fairy tales have always had a dark side (think Hansel…See More

Animated movies

I've found that just because a movie is animated, doesn't mean it's OK for kids to watch. I rented "The Incredibles," for my 4-year-old and he was terrified by the violence 20 minutes into the movie. It was weird. I actually saw the movie before I got it, and it didn't even sink in how scary it might be for my little guy.I was wondering if anyone had similar stories or advice about picking animated movies. I know the ratings systems, but those often seem vague. I'm trying to look deeper into…See More

seeking happy couples

I'm writing a story about couples' ideas of the secrets of a happy marriage. Couples of any length of marriage are welcome. The story is scheduled to run Feb. 14, and I really need to find people who are willing to talk and be photographed together. Younger couples are welcome, of course. Reply here, or just drop me a line to jennie.geisler@timesnews.com or give me a call at 870-1885.See More

pink stuff

October is almost here and the pink-labeled products are already hitting store shelves, promising to help to raise money for breast cancer research. I'm wondering: If you have a choice between the traditional label or a pink one, do you buy the pink? Do you buy stuff because it's pink, thinking it's cool and for a good cause? I love finding displays of pink stuff and seeing what they came up with this year. For instance, last year I found pink silicone bakeware at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I…See More

Jenn: I had no idea about the birthday thing. How did it happen that we've never had this conversation? I really need to keep up better. We should be friends on facebook. Are you having a birthday party for Chet? I didn't want to, but my…

parents and milestones

I'm working on a story for the ETN Family section on how hard it is to put that new kindergartener on the bus, or drop that college student off at the dorm. I'm trying to get to the center of that vortex of happiness, sadness, anxiety and relief. If you're going through it or know someone who is, call me at 870-1885, or send me an e-mail to jennie.geisler@timesnews.com. I'd love to hear from you.

About Me:
I tried a book called something like potty training in one day. I bought all the supplies recommended, which totaled something like $200. I kicked my husband out of the house and tried, and tried, and tried to get him to go on the potty. Nothing. I put him back in diapers for the time being, because he's digging in his heals right now. I'm just assuming he's not ready. Please tell me it's not my weakness in the face of a crying child.

Hard to believe, but Chet just turned 4.

I hear you are starting potty training. I recommend many, many pairs of real underpants. We used rubber pants on top of the real pants and after a couple of days of soggy pants, the message got through. (Of course, the new Thomas train every time he was successful helped, too!)
