We're looking for things to do this week during the school's spring break.
So far on the list:
Claytopia - We're trying to inspire the artist in our daughter. But we're also trying to inspire her to paint just 1 piece well instead of 5.
Erie Zoo - Probably today has the most potential. She and her BFF, Olivia, can run around and burn off energy. I just have to find where she has hidden the carousel coins.
Gate of Heaven Cemetery - Not to visit relatives, but to take the new dog and the tenni…

Our first Westie had to be put to sleep last fall. She had cancer.
We've struggled with adding another dog to the household, knowing that our second Westie was going to 1. oppose new company and 2. is in need of new company.
So with the help of dog whisperer Robin Cuneo, we visited the Anna Shelter on East 10th Street with No. 2 dog, Asta, to check out possible friends.
Nos. 1 and 3 were certainly not going to work out.
No. 2, a male stray the shelter…

Do you really need one?
Not if you stay in the United States. Most kids under 18 can travel in the United States with a parent without a passport.
Do you want one?
Probably. If you want to travel to Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, etc., your child will need one.
Why am I posting this?
Because my daughter's passport expired in January and I have been struggling with the question. Mainly because it costs more than $100 between the application, processing and photo fees.
But two trips to Canada…

I'm working on a story about how just because a movie or show is a cartoon doesn't mean it won't scare or confuse small children. My kid (4) was so freaked out about the beginning of "The Incredibles," that he hid behind the couch. Have you ever assumed an animated movie was OK? What do you think about it? Older Disney flicks aren't really any better. "101 Dalmations" has two smokers, thieves who drink, and the concept of skinning puppies. Fairy tales have always had a dark side (think Hansel an…

Sending sick kids or adults to school or work is a bad idea. But how do you know what sick is?
As I write this, I'm waiting for the phone call from school. Was the stomach ache real or just a plea to spend some time at home? Last time we didn't believe her, she barely made it in the door before throwing up all over the floor.
And then crying that she had made a mess.
My brother once cautioned me that kids generally can't tell the difference between hunger and upset stomachs.
So right now I'm…

As the mom of an only child, a daughter, I have a tendency to be over protective. I don't want her feelings hurt ... I just want her trip through childhood to be loving and carefree.
But it doesn't work that way.
My child goes to school and playdates where I don't have any control over that. But I thought I had control when I was present.
But during one afternoon when my daughter and her friend were verbally duking it out, as girls do, I received some good advice from other other girl's grand…

Most kids love to get mail, so my daughter developed this game.
She writes "letters" to us and then
"delivers" the letters as the "postal carrier."
This past week they were Valentines. But sometimes they are ways she wants to communicate when she has issues that she doesn't know how to resolve.
I've gotten letters that start with "I'm mad at you." Through the "game" we can sometimes get to the heart of the issue. I write back, using simple sentences, and ring for the postal carrier. Sometimes…

Show her you care about her AND the fight against cancer! The Community for Kanzius Pendant is the perfect alternative to the chocolate you were planning on getting that special someone this Valentine’s Day. Let her show she’s part of the wave!

Recently we had a "girls'" night at Peek'nPeak. That meant I took my daughter and her BFF up for an overnight stay.
We live in a 3-bedroom ranch, so ... at about this time of year, my daughter is bouncing off the walls. Getting out and active seemed like a good idea.
We headed up to the Peek, checked in and went swimming. By 6, they were ready for dinner. So I had them showered, in PJs and room service chicken tenders on the way.
Two TVs and three beds (albeit one a pullout) took care of the…

My husband's birthday is today!
The funny thing about parenting is that parent birthdays become more about the kid than the parent, which is a good thing.
My husband, who does not eat sweets, will be served up a chocolate cake tonight to make our daughter happy.

No shoes fit anymore. Had to go to the big W over the weekend to get new gym shoes.
Good news ... they are on sale. I bought three pair for $30, one was a size up ... anticipating the spring growth spurt.
Now's the time to keep an eye out for winter clothes on sale so you can stock up for next year.
Check out
Children's Place
Land's End
LL Bean
for great deals. I just got a winter coat for my daughter for next year from Children's Place (online) for $9.99. Plus $5 shipping.

"Mommy, you sure like to nap a lot," says my daughter. Yep. When I'm surrounded by people at work who are coughing, sneezing and otherwise sharing, I have a tendency on weekends to make a big pot of chicken soup and take a long winter's nap.
What she misses is that I am up at 4:30 a.m. working. And that I work 5 days a week, so I use weekends to catch up. And recover. And nothing is better than chicken soup.
A simple recipe is this:
3 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup sliced carrots
1/2 cup slic…

A recent interview with Laurel Honey of the Honey House Bakery on West 26th Street reinforced my thoughts about breakfast. Her theory is to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.
We agreed that kids still need a balanced dinner (it's more like adults should eat dinner like a pauper), but breakfast should still rule for kids.
So I've been trying to find more variations on breakfast.
Lately I've been making French toast with the super skinny Pepperidge Farms br…
