ErieMoms

For those who may not know i lost my wife to lung cancer in october of 2009 leaving behind is me and my step daughter whom i am raising own my own. yes a real mr mom yes i won in court as her biological is not a good father figure as in he was an abuser. ok what i want to kno wis if erie has anything like big brothers but for girls which i am guessing would be called big sisters .

the reason i am asking this is yes i have raised 7 other children 2 of my own and the rest steps. i have 3 older daughters 2 of which my 9 year old adores but they are so busy with there lives that they have very little time for the little sister . so i guess i am asking is anyone aware of anything for little girls like a big sister program? where they do things with younger girls.

i do things with my little one however there are some things that i feel a big sister figure is much better at than i i guess they call it girl bonding. like . i didnt raise all my children on my own always had a significant other involved and that gave us a mother father outlook on things.

so please if anyone is aware of some sort of program as such could you let me know if it even exists. we live in the girard area i figured i would post and see if nayone else has either heard of such a thing or used such a thing. thank you all very much ahead of time.

Hi Steve. I know that Family Services of Erie County offers a Big Brother/Big Sister mentoring program. You can get more information on it here: http://www.familyserviceserie.org/bbbs.php.

Another idea is to get her involved in Girl Scouts. There are a lot of positive role models there...and the opportunity to bond with girls her age and the mom leaders -- they do lots of fun things...crafts, activities, events, camping. Even if her school doesn't offer it...the chances are good there's a nearby troop at a church or something. You can get more info at the local Girl Scouts of Western PA office: http://www.gswpa.org/.

Another fun place for young girls to meet and hang out with other girls is the YMCA. I have my daughters in swim classes and tumbling classes and they love them both. They also offer team sports, etc., summer camps, etc.

Some fun places in Erie to take her yourself: Claytopia (paint your own pottery..it's pricey, but...little girls love it), the Children's Museum, the Erie Zoo (zoo memberships = tremendous value), Blasco Library (lots of cozy reading nooks), FREE craft classes at Michael's Craft store (at the mall...check their WEb site for a schedule), the Family First Bounce Zone & Indoor Miniature Golf, the Bounce-house place at the All-Season's Marketplace (the old Ames store at hte Millcreek Mall near Dicks) and ...the Tom Ridge Environmental Center offers lots of fun classes and activities for kids and families...you can see their schedule of events at their WEb site, too.
