Do you really need one?

Not if you stay in the United States. Most kids under 18 can travel in the United States with a parent without a passport.

Do you want one?

Probably. If you want to travel to Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, etc., your child will need one.

Why am I posting this?

Because my daughter's passport expired in January and I have been struggling with the question. Mainly because it costs more than $100 between the application, processing and photo fees.

But two trips to Canada in the past two years, and a possible trip to Cancun at Christmas, reminded me that if we want to see the falls, go to Port Dover or go to Cancun next year, she needs her passport renewed.

Here are some tips:

Fill out the form online. I've stood behind more than one person (my passport, hers) who didn't fill in the form correctly. They don't allow the white stuff to erase mistakes. The delete button works well.

Bring your checkbook. You have to write out more than one check.

Let the guy at the Post Office take the picture (you pay $15). I stood behind two people who had their applications rejected because the Postal worker didn't like it. Or choose a notable photographer who has experience. Don't do it yourself.

Kid passports only last 5 years. It's a pain, but they change in appearance a lot. And see the next point ...

Both parents must be present to get a child's passport, even a renewal. Once again, it's a pain, but it guarantees that both parents are aware the child has a passport.

You need to call in advance to make an appointment (in this region) for a passport application/renewal. Times are limited.

It can take up to 6 weeks to get a passport back. I've gotten them in 2 weeks, but be aware it can take some time. You can pay extra for expedited services.
